For patients and physicians
Second opinions
Surgery is a deliberate decision. A second opinion gives you a clearer picture of what the imaging shows, what the trade-offs are, and whether the recommended operation is the right one for your case. We make this process simple — and honest — whether you are local to Topeka or seeking telehealth from elsewhere in Kansas.
How it works
A five-step process from your first call to your decision. Most second opinions complete in under two weeks.
- 1
Request a second opinion
Call our office or use the contact form. Tell us briefly about your condition, where you have been seen, and what surgery (or surgeries) have been recommended. We will follow up within one business day to confirm what we need.
- 2
Send your records and imaging securely
Our office will send you a secure upload link for your MRI, CT, X-rays, and operative or clinic notes. We can also coordinate with your prior physician to pull records directly. All transmission is HIPAA compliant.
- 3
Pre-visit imaging review
Before your appointment, Dr. Tuchek personally reviews your imaging and records. This is not a five-minute glance — it is a focused study of your case so the visit can be substantive, not introductory.
- 4
Consultation — telehealth or in person
You meet with Dr. Tuchek to walk through what we are seeing, what the trade-offs look like, what we would recommend, and what we would not. Telehealth visits are available for patients in Kansas. In-person visits are required for any physical examination or surgical scheduling.
- 5
You decide
A second opinion is information, not a sales pitch. You may decide to stay with your original surgeon, to schedule with us, or to wait and reassess. Whatever you choose, you will leave the consultation with a clearer picture of your options.
What we will need
- Recent imaging — MRI, CT, or X-rays of the affected region
- Operative notes from any prior spine or brain surgery
- Clinic notes from the consulting physician
- A current list of your medications and supplements
- A brief summary, in your own words, of what is bothering you
What you can expect
- A focused, unrushed discussion of your specific case
- A clear opinion on whether surgery is indicated — or not
- A discussion of alternatives we would consider first
- No pressure to schedule with us if your current path is right
- Coordination with your existing physicians, with your permission
Telehealth second opinions
Telehealth consultations are available for patients physically located in Kansas. Telehealth visits are designed for record review and informational discussion; they do not create a physician-patient relationship for treatment unless explicitly established, and they do not include physical examination or prescriptions. Surgical scheduling requires an in-person visit.
Common questions
Does my insurance cover a second opinion?
Most insurance plans cover second opinions, especially before a planned surgery. Our office will verify your benefits and pre-authorization requirements before your visit. We will tell you what to expect for out-of-pocket cost, in writing, before you commit.
Will Dr. Tuchek try to take me as a patient?
No. The job of a second opinion is to give you the clearest picture of your options. If we agree with your surgeon's plan, we will say so. If we would recommend something different, we will tell you why. The decision is yours, and we are equally happy to coordinate with your existing physician.
How long does the process take?
Most second opinions complete within two weeks from your first call. The longest step is usually obtaining your prior imaging and records — we move quickly once they are in hand.
Can you talk to my current surgeon?
Yes, with your written permission. Direct surgeon-to-surgeon conversations often answer questions faster than going through records. If you would prefer we not contact them, we will respect that and work only from the materials you provide.
What if you recommend my original surgery plan?
Then you have confirmation that your current path is sound — and you can move forward with more confidence. We will document our review and send a written summary to you and, with your permission, to your treating surgeon.
