Please note: All patients will see our pre-anesthesia team to provide specific medical evaluation and guidance prior to surgery. General instructions are provided below.
General Pre-Operative Instructions
Essential guidelines for all neurosurgical procedures to ensure your safety and the best possible outcome.
Medications
- Stop all blood thinners (Aspirin, Plavix, Coumadin, NSAIDs/Ibuprofen) 7-10 days prior to surgery.
- Directly consult your cardiologist if you have cardiac stents before stopping anti-platelet agents.
- Bring an updated list of all medications and supplements to your pre-op appointment.
Fasting
- Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery.
- This includes water, gum, mints, and tobacco.
- Clear liquids may be permitted up to 2 hours before arrival in specific cases—check with the anesthesia team.
Hygiene & Preparation
- Shower with Hibiclens (antiseptic soap) the night before and morning of surgery.
- Do not apply lotions, creams, or makeup.
- Leave all jewelry and valuables at home.
- Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
